As much as we all dream of having our own brand new cars, most of the time budget constraints make this impossible. We settle then for used cars until we are able to have more financial freedom to purchase that dream car. Unlike purchasing brand new ones though, we have to be more circumspect when buying secondhand cars.

Here are some things you may want to consider before making that purchase:
1. Buy only from reputable dealers such as St George car dealerships.
2. Scrutinize registration papers and the engine plate to ensure that they have not been tampered and are the same. You wouldn’t want to drive a hot car, would you?
3. Check the car’s mileage. The numbers to remember here would be 10,000mi/year or 16,000km/year. So a car that has been used for five years should have a mileage of around 80,000 kilometers. If it’s way beyond that, the car has been driven hard and isn’t worth buying.
4. Inspect the exterior and interior for scratches, dents, and corrosion. If you spot a rust blemish, press the panel gently and listen for any cracking noise which is a good indicator of advanced corrosion.
5. Test drive the car preferably with a trusted mechanic who can give feedback on the car’s performance and offer you reliable advice. Do ask him to help you as well in inspecting the car’s engine.
6. Ask for a document from the registered owner allowing the dealer to transact the sale of his car. If you went to a reputable car dealer, chances are they would already have this prepared beforehand.

Thanks for this great post.
